History: Clifton Heights, located along the southwest border of St. Louis is an inviting neighborhood highlighted by a wonderful park with a playground and a lake—an ideal location for walking or hosting neighborhood-wide events. The neighborhood is home to a rich history with houses of varying architectural styles, including some Victorians and numerous Arts & Crafts and bungalow-style homes. Portions of Clifton Heights are among the earliest developed areas in southwest St. Louis. Famed St. Louis surveyor Julius Pitzman was commissioned to survey and plat Clifton Heights in 1885. Pitzman was largely responsible for the development of the “private place” concept of neighborhoods in St. Louis. He designed many of them, from Compton Heights and Benton Place in south St. Louis to the streets that hold the elegant mansions of the Central West End. One of Pitzman’s innovations was to design streets which match the contours of the land. In Clifton Heights, the streets follow a steep drop to a small park and pond which was originally a sink hole. The result is a neighborhood of hilly streets with gentle curves ending in a circle surrounding what came to be called Clifton Park. First developed as a private park for residents of the Clifton Heights subdivision, the tract was conveyed to the city of St. Louis in 1912. About 1922, the city bought the adjoining property, enlarging the park to its present size of 4.4 acres. This combination of natural topography and history gives much of Clifton Heights its distinctive look and feel. Events: Clifton Park is the setting for several neighborhood events, including the annual Easter Egg Hunt—the city’s oldest—in April, the Watermelon Social in August, and the Fall Fest in October.
