Lindenwood Park Directory 2024

2024 | Lindenwood Park Community Directory 32 History of the Lindenwood Area The area now known as Lindenwood originally consisted of parts of Charles Gratiot’s vast Spanish land grant. During the first half of the nineteenth century this broad area was subdivided into various large tracts and turned into farms. In 1888 part of the Gratiot Lindenwood area was subdivided and called the Harlem Place Subdivision. It was truly rural in those days. Harlem Place subdivision was developed in 1888 by a former Methodist minister Leander Hallock and received its name from his early association with the Dutch district of Harlem in his home state of New York. Its boundaries were the south side of Fyler Avenue from Ivanhoe Avenue to the Frisco Railway, then southward beyond Hancock Avenue. The Mittelberg Farm covered the territory south of Marquette. It was Mr. Mittelberg who sent away to Germany for Linden saplings to plant on his land. One of the trees stood on the corner of Lindenwood Place and McCausland Avenue. This gave the neighborhood its name. Starting in 1855 one could board the Frisco suburban train. The Lindenwood Station, at the corner of Marquette and McCausland avenues served as a commuter stop for trains heading into downtown St. Louis from the 1880s to the 1920s. With transportation to the city available, the area could be opened for residential development. As more and more people moved into the area from 1890 through 1920, business districts, larger schools and new churches appeared including: Immanuel Congregational (1891) Longfellow Public Elementary (1891) Epiphany of Our Lord (1911) Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Elementary (1912) Lindenwood Public Elementary (Portable classrooms in 1913; current building in 1929) Southwest Baptist Church (1921) Timothy Lutheran (1927) Mallinckrodt School (Portable classrooms in 1928; current school building, 1940) Mount Tabor United Church of Christ (1928) Lindenwood Baptist Church (1932) Word of Life Lutheran (1943) Union United Methodist (1952) Watson Terrace Christian Church (1952) During the 1920s and 1930s, rapid development continued. Most major new housing development was completed by 1950 with spot in-fill development after that time. The most recent major developments were the subdivision of Lindenwood Heights in 1963 and the current development of the Lindenwood School property, begun in 2006. Lindenwood City Park as we know it was completed in 1955. The Lindenwood Neighborhood continues to thrive today with a population of about 10,000. Residents take pride in their homes and it shows in the pleasant ambience of the area. Lindenwood is and will continue to be a great place to live!
