MARQUIS MAY 2024

MARQUIS • Serving St. Louis’ Near Southside Neighborhoods MAY 2024 3 It’s spring, and as we emerge from our cocoons and gather together to beautify our shared outdoor spaces, we look forward to ambling about (with or without guests, children, dogs or leashed kitties) enjoying our increasingly lush green surroundings with one another and with visitors. The Beautification Committee is gearing up to create and sustain a worthy back- drop for our Lafayette Square 2024 season events, which begin with our concerts in the park, vintage baseball and the antique show. The Beautification Committee brings together neighbors, community group volunteers and vendors to keep our neigh- borhood feeling like a green urban oasis. Every season we welcome volunteers to join us for special events such as the Mulch-A-Thon, Plant-A-Thon and inevi- table Weed-A-Thon, but we also need volunteers to adopt special places or specific jobs. Watering continues to be a major problem as our automated watering system along the ParkAvenue medians and bump- outs from Truman Parkway to 18th Street has not yet been repaired. We have three bump-outs on Park Avenue and three medians on Lafayette that were never auto- mated and need weekly watering during dry spells. Below is our partial wish list for 2024: •Adopted SPACES available: The mini park at Park Avenue and Mississippi Avenue needs a General Care- taker to plant and water the urn and such. •Adopted JOBS available: A person to split the weekly one-hour WATERING of the Park Avenue median from 18th Street to Dolman Street. Hose available at local businesses and the Sprucing up the Square is already underway B y L inda W einer community garden. You won’t believe your arms! •A back up WATER person to help out on the medians on Lafayette at 18th Street and at Mississippi Avenue. You know we all need a vacation. •A WATERING volunteer for the three bump-outs on Park Avenue at Vail Place. Water supply donated by Park Avenue businesses. •WEEDERS needed for the medians on Park Avenue and on Lafayette Avenue. Pick your favorite. If you would like to volunteer to adopt a space to plant or maintain, we need you. To volunteer, look for announcements on NextDoor and Facebook, or email us at beautification@lafayettesquare.org . Our thanks already to Michael Moore, Stephanie Gabathuler, Bob Davidson, Chris Budde, Christine Burke, Philip Lamczyk, Gerry Leonard, Michael Lode and Sam Wilde. Looking forward to a beautiful season! The Beautification Team of neighbors (left to right) Phil Lamczyk, Linda Weiner, Chris Budde, Steve and Sam Wilde, and the Honor Students from CBC High School work on Park Avenue on March 24.  Steve and Sam Wilde are two men with a truck at the MULCH-A-THON. to you, they need to know how to best reach you quickly.
