20 2024 | St. Louis Hills Community Directory The Lily Pond The Lily Pond, located in the heart of Francis Park, is a gem for the whole family to enjoy. With several benches as well as open fields surrounding the pond, it is a prime location to kick back, relax and enjoy the stunningly beautiful pop of white, yellow, red and pink lilies, all while hearing the soothing sounds of the fountain. The Lily Pond has long been a highlight of the community and is cared for by The Lily Pond Committee, which is comprised of active members of The St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association. Each spring the Lily Pond Committee and local volunteers kick off the season by cleaning out the remnants of fall from the pond and turning the water on. Once the weather stabilizes and temperatures average 70 degrees at night, the committee gets to work beautifying the pond by planting a wide variety of water lilies, Cannas, Thalia, lotuses and even a Victoria Amazonica or Queen Victoria, a type of water lily with huge spikey leaves. Once all the plants are in their new homes the Lily Pond Committee members take weekly turns keeping the pond clean and meet as a group bi-weekly for fertilizing, trimming and skimming through early October. In addition to the beautiful plants, the pond is also a home to a wide variety of native insects and spiders ranging from Dragon Flies to Long Jaw Orb Weavers as well as a rest stop for Mallard Ducks. We do ask that in order to preserve the tranquility of the pond that park patrons refrain from wading in the water, letting their dogs play in the water, feeding the ducks and throwing sticks in to the pond.
