GRIFFIN November 24
November 2024 • CWEA GRIFFIN • 13 Chapman from Page 9 Little did I know that Ellie was teaching me every aspect of her job. A few years later, when Ellie retired from the paper, she recommended me as her replacement as the pa- per’s copy editor — my first job in what became a new career. Ellie also gave me the opportu- nity to write news and feature ar- ticles. The feature articles became an additional source of income, as I became part of the Word’s stable of freelance contributors. This opportunity provided me with my first published bylines, which would be instrumental in furthering my education. Ellie encouraged me to apply for a scholarship from the Journalism Foundation of St. Louis. I submitted some of my published work from the Word with my application. Two years in a row, I was granted schol- arships from the Foundation, which helped pay for my education. Ellie’s mentorship was instrumen- tal in my becoming a professional editor. Two months after I graduat- ed from UM–St. Louis, I was hired as an editor at a prestigious medical publisher, a job I held for 15 years. I owe that in great part to Ellie’s tire- less training and encouragement. I was one of many, many UM–St. Louis students — and other em- ployees of that medical publisher — who benefited from Ellie’s teaching and mentorship.
