GRIFFIN November 24

November 2024 • CWEA GRIFFIN • 19 Corner of History The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis A CWE and St. Louis landmark, the so-called “New Cathedral” is the mother church of the St. Louis Archdiocese. Located at 4431 Lindell Blvd., it was completed in 1914 and is named for Saint Louis IX of France, also the city’s namesake. Pope John Paul II visited in 1999 and designated the church as a basilica. Famed St. Louis architects Barnett, Haynes & Barnett designed the church in Neo-Byzantine/Romanesque Revival style. It boasts one of the largest installations of mosaics in the Western Hemisphere. The mosaics depict notable figures in St. Louis Catholic history, the life of Saint Louis and biblical scenes. The building holds 2,500 and has three domes measuring 227 feet high. An interesting historical note: when the Pope visited in 1999, during a prayer service, he asked Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan to spare the life of a death row inmate scheduled to be executed within weeks. Carnahan commuted the sentence to life without parole. Visit https://cathedralstl.org/ for information on tours and the Cathedral Museum. The front facade of the Cathedral is shown in a postcard from the 1920s (left) and today.
