Surveyor William Lindsay Long had laid out the town of Fenton in 1818. By 1833, the people of Fenton were beginning to get a little worried about the growing settlement down river by Boli’s Ford and petitioned the city of St. Louis to run Gravois Road through the town of Fenton instead of downstream. This was passed by the highway board and Gravois Road moved north to where Old Gravois Road is today. The road has been used as a covered wagon trail, a farm-to-market road, a cattle trail, as well as stage line. In 1914 it earned the distinction of being the first county road in the entire state to be paved. Gravois Road was very important to the growth of the area.
