Tom & Lynne Keay purchased their first Lafayette Square home on Mississippi Avenue following the Lafayette Square house tour in 1970.This Second Empire residence at 1529Vail Place is a merger of two 1880s extremely derelict structures acquired from the St. Louis Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) in 1995 and 1999.The purchase prices were respectively $500 and $800. During the eighteen months of reconstruction ninety percent of both buildings were demolished. The finished home retains only the original 19th century facades as required by the Lafayette Square Historic Code. Beyond the front door lies the merged two older structures into a “new” single, custom built modern residence of traditional design. For the Christmas season the Keays have decorated multiple holiday trees, two of which hold ornaments purchased from travels around the world. Beneath the largest tree are the owner’s treasured toys of Christmases past. The tree itself displays traditional and family inherited ornaments. The formal dining room is set for a holiday celebration, while scattered around the main rooms miniature porcelain Christmas villages overlook the festivities. Visitors will exit through the holiday garden. 8 1529 Vail Tom & Lynne Keay
