10 • St. Louis Hills House Tour • 2023 6446 Eichelberger John and Pat Talley’s 1951 ranch is perhaps one of the best examples of a St. Louis Hills Estate home built by Frederick M. Stamm. The Talleys knew this home was special not only for architectural features, but for the house’s solid, structural strength. The home is entered from a graceful, curving sidewalk leading to the bright midcentury front door. One side of the entry is flanked with a sidelight using oversized glass blocks. Inside, the entryway pony wall has original white wooden pillars. The large picture window not only floods the front room with natural light, but it also connects to the beauty and bustle of Francis Park just across the street. This home is a great example of residential terrazzo floors. Terrazzo reached peak popularity in mid-century modern architecture. Architects and designers of this period favored terrazzo for its clean, minimalist look. Terrazzo flooring traditionally consisted of marble or granite chips set in concrete that is polished to a smooth surface, creating a decorative patterned finish of small, interspersed colored flakes. Kitchen updates include new cabinets, counters, a generous island, a deep teal glass tile backsplash, and new appliances.
