18 • St. Louis Hills House Tour • 2023 5900 Highfield Built in 1955, this 3,022-square foot, mid-century modern home was updated to emphasize its modern geometrical lines, smooth surfaces and vertical space. Rob and Amanda Hehmeyer bought this eye-catching home just three years ago. Amanda shared that it’s always been a favorite of hers. She said as soon as it came on the market she and Rob agreed to go for it. Amanda noted the previous homeowners completed many updates, and the home had been lovingly cared for by them. Amanda said she appreciates so many things about the house, both large and small. The home’s original architect, Francis Gilmore Avis (1898- 1987) was known as one of the first St. Louis architects to work extensively in the Art Deco style, with emphasis in glazed and terra cotta tiles. 5900 Highfield is an example of his ability to design using timeless modern lines for a residential home. The home’s lanai was in perfect condition with its screened in room. However, Amanda knew they could make better use of the space. Working with the Aleto Construction Group, the Hehmeyer’s created a plan that moved the interior walls demarcating the main home and the lanai. This addition became an open, spacious area to entertain and gather as a family. The lanai’s exterior screens were replaced with newwindows and screens, updating the home’s entire back wall.
