26 • St. Louis Hills House Tour • 2023 6747 High Circle In 2007 Joe and Jill Chatman discovered St. Louis Hills while taking their kids to Ted Drewes. “Not being from the area, we didn’t know a place like this existed in St. Louis City.” They moved to their first St. Louis Hills house a year later. “Nowwe couldn’t part with this area or the city!” said Jill. 6747 High Circle is the Chatmans’ second St. Louis Hills home. The midcentury ranch was built in 1952, and the Chatman’s thoughtful renovation pays homage to the special features of the house. Jill loves the MCM teal door with horizontal windows. Many homes of this era used wrought iron that’s typically the first thing removed. However, this home’s wrought iron bannisters were saved. The white lines and unique scalloped ornamentation feel feminine and strong. The kitchen is a statement in use of clean lines and geometric shapes. White upper and lower cabinets with slab doors are an updated version of what would have naturally been the originals. The island is finished in soft wood tones and provides space to cook and gather. The kitchen and living room are connected by a pass- through fireplace set in a wall of light brown, narrow Roman bricks. The modern minimalist living room has a long rectangular glass block window. Glass block windows became a popular at the time St. Louis Hills was being developed in the 1930s and 1940s. The first hollow glass block was developed and patented by Gustave Falconnier in 1886.
