St. Louis Hills House Tour 2023

38 • St. Louis Hills House Tour • 2023 St. Thomas the Apostle Romanian Orthodox Church Since May 17, 1959 St. Thomas the Apostle Romanian Orthodox Church has graced the corner of Donovan and Nottingham. St. Thomas Church holds beautiful Iconography, which refers to the making and use of religious or ritual icons. Icons are pictorial representations of biblical scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, portraits of saints, and historical events throughout the history of the church. Icons are typically two dimensional. Most of the art is made using paint, mosaic, embroidery, weaving, carving, engraving, and other methods. The use of gold in Orthodox iconography refers to the ‘luminosity of Christ’, the preciousness and immortality linked to Jesus. The Icon Screen is used in a variety of churches, and is used to represent the heavenly (alter) meeting the earthly (the nave). Icons are a 2,000 year old tradition, with the colors and shapes being highly symbolic and meaningful. Everyone is able to appreciate the beauty and meticulous craftsmanship used to help parishioners practice their faith. The copper dome of St. Thomas Church was refurbished the summer of 2023. It is a work of art in itself. No matter your personal spiritual path, spending time admiring church artwork is an uplifting and memorable experience. (Note: The church is not open until noon today due to a mass being in session).
