Sheldon Vol2 PINK

PETER PALERMO Executive Director, The Sheldon In the spring of 2022, The Sheldon’s artistic team gathered for coffee at the Living Room in Maplewood (love that place!) and sketched out our plans for the next few years. Over lattes and toast, we decided that our season of visual arts, music and educational projects should have an overarching theme. Almost immediately and unanimously, the first theme we selected was “Curiosity.” What word better captures our work? Curiosity is what we bring to our jobs as curators, directors and bookers. It is also what we hope our audience brings with them—that strong desire to know something new. I suspect—by simply picking up this second issue of VOLUME —that you, dear reader, are a curious person. Here’s the little secret of life at The Sheldon: We are counting on that curiosity. We know you won’t have heard of all the artists we plan to bring to you this season, but we’re putting our trust in the fact that you have a strong desire to learn something new. If, in fact, you decide to attend something totally new this year and satisfy that curiosity, I thank you! This is a real vote of confidence for The Sheldon and something we take seriously. You’re trusting us with your time and treasure and everyone here works very hard to make sure your trust in us is not misplaced. Your curiosity will be rewarded! But, let’s remember—curiosity is a journey, not a destination. Just like love—there is no completion. Learning that new thing just makes you want to learn another. Lucky for you, there is always something new for you to learn here at The Sheldon. D E A R L e t t e r f r o m t h e d i r e c t o r 3 VOLUME Art that Takes Up Space
