F r o m t h e D e s k o f S h e l l y D u n n I think there’s virtue in being curious enough to experience something unknown. Truly unknown, without a recommendation, a review or an algorithmically curated list made just for you. If you aren’t pre-determined to like something, will you like it? You don’t know! And that’s the beauty of it. We live in an age that reinforces what we’ve told our AI-overlords we love. They happily feed it to us with a steady diet of carefully curated content. Of course we love it. The algorithm takes all our likes and dislikes and feeds us back what we want. Or what it thinks we think we want. How would we even know inside our echo chamber of art? To this I say, please pay me the respect of not catering to my every need. One must endure an unpleasant moment before earning the right to call their favorite artist “an acquired taste.” This is how we discover something new. It’s the unplanned diversion on a road trip. It’s stumbling upon a work of art that’s so jarring and unexpected, it rearranges your brain cells. Those who consider ourselves cultured, should always embrace art that isn’t to our liking…yet. So read something that wasn’t recommended to you. Watch a show you’ve never heard of. Enjoy the excitement of a concert as the lights go up on...wait, who’s performing? Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed it. And if you didn’t, that’s okay too. “A foray into the terrifying unknown.” 60 VOL. 02 2023—2024
