Kingdom House joined the
Central Committee of Social Agencies
in 1911 – making it one of the founding
agencies of this body.

This Central
Council served to formalize an existing
information exchange network among
social service agencies initiated after
the 1907 Social Service Conference
of St. Louis. The Council advocated
cooperative study and planning among
twenty-eight social welfare groups and
civic organizations. Among other things,
“Kingdom House was represented at a
meeting at the Mayor’s office to discuss
solving the problem of unemployment
[December 18, 1914]…”

That close association between
the Central Council and Kingdom
House, an alliance between secular
and religious, encouraged greater
cooperation and involvement between
the two organizations. At the January
Women’s Board of City Missions
meeting in 1922, “Mr. Street, director
of the Community Council gave a most
interesting and helpful talk on the work
of the Council in its various phases
and told of how it could help the work
of Kingdom House. He also explained
[the] Community Chest plan, and stated
it had been tried in about 75 cities and
