In addition to the financial donors, nine
senior companions were honored for giving
20 hours a week to visiting senior citizens
within a four-block radius of the southside
community center.
Merrydell May endowed the Howard L.
May Center, the newly- expanded infant care
facility.

The celebration marked more than
physical expansion. Over the previous
summer, Kingdom House had added
to the existing summer curriculum the
STAR (Success Through Accepting
Responsibility) program. These summer
activities were part of a partnership
between the agency and neighboring
Ralston Purina.
For the thirteenth successive year the
‘Near Southside Community Campus –
Summer Fun’ program has been offering
challenging adventures to youth aged 11-14
in the Kingdom House community. Summer
Fun ’87, called ‘Expanding Our Horizons’
has involved 150 young teenagers in an
adventure designed to strengthen academic,
technical and social skills in a ‘fun’
environment.
For six weeks beginning in June, ten
classes have been offered on an alternating
day schedule, with Fridays devoted to
special field trips and visits of guest
resource persons. Most classes were held at
Kingdom House or at Peabody School with
lunch served to all participants at 11:30 at
Kingdom House each day.
A new dimension to the program this
year was an emphasis on helping students to
be responsible called the ‘All Students Can
Be STARS Program.’ STAR denotes Success
Through accepting Responsibility and was
broken down into weekly themes stressing
making right choices, being of service to
others, showing respect for oneself and
others, and being honest and trustworthy.
