adjustment to new environments.
Several impediments occurred.
These were directly and indirectly
related to the economic recession of
the latter 1950s, which hit the area
surrounding Kingdom House especially
hard. Reports show continued need for
program leaders in Boy Scouts, cooking
and sewing classes, as well as concern
for rising unemployment amongst those
living in the neighborhood – part of
the movement of industry away from
the area as well as the dislocations
associated with urban renewal and
highway construction. In addition,
the Church at Kingdom House is not
progressing as hoped for.
In the fall of 1958, the demand for
food was high, and many serious family
problems were noted in the Women’s
Board
Minutes
. By January, nearly 15
families per day were applying for help.
