effect of this demolition and other urban

renewal projects during this time was

to dislocate many poor residents with

few to no other housing alternatives.

As part of President John F. Kennedy’s

New Frontier, additional federal housing

projects were undertaken. Picking up

where Kennedy’s tragic death left off,

Lyndon Johnson’s even more ambitious

Great Society created the largest public

housing projects in the United States.

Many of those dislocated by urban

renewal wound up in housing projects

near Kingdom House. Those dwellings

not removed as part of slum clearance

were cleared for new freeways.
